Call for Applications:
Communications Intern at The Center for Migration Studies

The Fordham Initiative on Migrants, Migration, and Human Dignity, with generous funding from the Cummings Foundation, seeks applications from Fordham undergraduate and graduate students for an internship at the Center for Migration Studies (CMS). CMS is a think tank and educational institute devoted to the study of international migration, to the promotion of understanding between immigrants and receiving communities, and to public policies that safeguard the dignity and rights of migrants, refugees and newcomers. Founded in 1964 and producing academic journals, legal and policy recommendations, and dialogue for better and more rational and compassionate migration solutions, CMS is a mission-driven workplace filled with opportunities to learn, explore new ideas, and build new skills.

Compensation: $4500

Time Commitment: September 2026-May 2027, 10 hours/week for 24 weeks

COMMUNICATIONS INTERN

The communications intern at CMS will support the Communications Director and other CMS staff with:

• Drafting and editing website content, newsletters, email campaigns, event invitations, and other communications materials;
• Researching migration issues and writing blogs, articles, and other web content that highlight CMS research, publications, and events;
• Supporting social media marketing by assisting with the creation of content for CMS’s social media networks (LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter);
• Assisting with the promotion and live support of webinars, conferences, and public events, including registration management and audience engagement;
• Building distribution lists and readership of CMS publications (International Migration Review, Journal on Migration and Human Security, Migration Update) through identification of key constituents including scholars, public officials, faith communities, community-based organizations, non-governmental organizations, corporate leaders, and others;
• Maintaining and updating media lists, contact databases, and communications distribution lists;
• Assisting with the production and dissemination of press releases and other external relations materials;
• Assisting with the development of presentations, reports, and communications materials for funders, partners, and public audiences;
• Attending external events on behalf of CMS staff and producing summaries;
• Helping manage and organize CMS digital assets, including photos, videos, publications, and marketing materials.

This internship will provide insight into the organization and the work CMS is producing through various channels. It will provide professional development opportunities for students interested in migration and refugee research and policy developments. The intern will have the opportunity to conduct writing assignments on a variety of international and domestic migration issues. However, they will also be expected to perform administrative duties and other routine operations.

As part of their internship, students must attend three (3) Fordham Reflection and Formation sessions with other interns per semester, through the Initiative on Migrants, Migration, and Human Dignity.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will be familiar with migration-related issues and current migration-related news and events. Candidates must be detail-oriented and have excellent written and spoken communication skills, outstanding organizational skills, and the ability to work independently. Ideal candidates should also be passionate about migration, refugee, and population issues.
